Introduction



One of the diploid species of Banana is Musa acuminata.There are 7 subspecies of Musa acuminata.These include:
  • Musa acuminata subsp. burmannica Simmonds
  • Musa acuminata subsp. truncata (Ridley) Kiew
  • Musa acuminata subsp. errans Argent
  • Musa acuminata subsp. microcarpa (Beccari) Simmonds
  • Musa acuminata subsp. malaccensis (Ridley) Simmonds
  • Musa acuminata subsp. zebrina  (Van Houtte) R.E. Nasution)
  • Musa acuminata subsp. siamea Simmonds

Musa acuminata subsp. malaccensis 


Musa acuminata ssp. malaccensis is one of the subspecies of Musa  acuminata.  It is amongst the main subspecies of Musa acuminata that has  contributed to the genetics of edible bananas in other words development of edible species of banana.One such example is  Dh pahang (a haploid form of Musa acuminata ssp. malaccensis )whose  genome was doubled to obtain a homozygous diploid .It is the only monocotyledone whose genome is sequenced.
